Police responded to an active shooter at Florida State University’s (FSU) student union, the school reported on social media. A suspect is reportedly in custody, and at least six were injured.
The warning came in at 12:01 p.m.
“Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions,” the FSU alert said. “Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”
At least six people have been hospitalized, including one person in critical condition, a spokesperson for Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said. The other patients were in serious condition, the spokesperson said. The extent of the victims’ injuries was not immediately known.
TMH was receiving and treating people affected by the shooting, said Sarah Cannon, a hospital spokesperson.
Around 4 p.m., Tallahassee Police announced the campus was secure.
The Tallahassee Democrat reported at 1:05 p.m. that a suspect was in custody. The Associated Press confirmed that as well, but said there were no additional details about the person who was in custody.
One social media user posted what appeared to be video of an arrest being made on campus.
As of about 12:40 p.m., FSU said police were on the scene and more are headed there. For those in need of immediate emergency assistance, FSU said to call 911 or the university’s police department at 850-644-1234. Those on Florida State’s campus are advised to seek shelter and await further instructions, per the university emergency alert.
State and local officials were investigating.
“My office is responding to the active shooter situation on FSU’s campus, and we will provide updates as they become available,” Attorney General James Uthmeier said in a statement.
Additionally, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said federal authorities have responded.
“The FBI is on the scene at Florida State and we are in communication with agents on the ground,” she posted. “Our priority is the safety of everyone involved. We will keep updating as we learn more. Praying for all.”
Oglesby Student Union is located about one and a half miles from the Florida State Capitol.
“From our vantage point here in the Senate, we can see and hear many first responder vehicles rushing to FSU,” posted Senate President Ben Albritton on X. “Grateful for their courage. Praying for the entire FSU community.”
President Donald Trump said from the Oval Office that he had been “fully briefed.”
“It’s a horrible thing. It’s horrible that things like this take place,” Trump said.
Hundreds of students streamed away from the direction of the student union. Students were glued to their phones, some visibly emotional.
Junior Joshua Sirmans, 20, was in the university’s main library when he said alarms began going off warning of an active shooter. Sirmans said law enforcement officers escorted him and other students out of the library with their hands over their heads.

Just remember: Our legislature wants to lower the age to buy a gun, our governor wants open carry (except near him) and Randy Fine wanted guns on campus.
How sad and disgusting and heartbreaking that this symbolizes what our nation has become. Our “leaders” glorify guns and ban books; they attack universities, the free press, and stifle dissent – ut call it “freedom.”
Another sad and terrifying day, but this is the world we live in. thoughts and prayers just don’t cut it.

So . . . Florida law enforcement is off chasing the brown people and can’t be bothered with the son of a deputy randomly terrorizing the University in our state government’s home town. The weak and stupid Panicans are posting like crazy here in support of their weak and stupid leaders. On this Maundy Thursday, we can all take a knee and realized that their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ died for their sins. I just wish they wouldn’t think that this self-sacrifice was license for them to commit sooooo many.
