The Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) congratulated its former chairman Lenny Curry Tuesday night for advancing to the runoff election for Jacksonville’s next mayor.

“The RPOF congratulates Lenny Curry on a hard-fought race and for advancing to the general election in the Jacksonville mayor’s race,” current RPOF Chair Blaise Ingoglia wrote in  a statement. “As a strong conservative with a clear vision for the future of Jacksonville, Lenny is hands down the right candidate for the job.

“We look forward to the voters of Jacksonville continuing to get to know Lenny and the Republican principles he stands for, like making Jacksonville the ‘jobs city’; ensuring the city is safe and secure by working hand-in-hand with law enforcement; and, making certain that Jacksonville’s children have every opportunity for a great education,” Ingoglia said.

Incumbent Mayor Alvin Brown led Curry by 43 to 38 percent, according to the Duval County Supervisor of Elections website. Republican Jacksonville City Councilman Bill Bishop came in third with 17 percent, while Omega Allen, running with no party affiliation, took 2 percent.

Since neither Curry nor Brown received a majority of the vote, the runoff will be held May 19.
