The collective stupidity of the Florida Legislature is “astounding,” attorney John Morgan says in the latest email blast to supporters of legalized medical marijuana.
As the most visible advocate as the principal financial backer of United for Care, Morgan leads the largest nonpartisan organization in Florida urging voters to approve legalizing medical marijuana.
As dependably blunt as ever, Morgan follows that statement up with a hard – yet clear – truth: Most politicians are “out to protect their own careers.”
By ignoring medical marijuana and the 58 percent of Floridians who voted for Amendment 2 last year, lawmakers are not only endangering their personal chances in 2016, but also the presidential race.
That’s a guarantee, Morgan says.
First, he points out that turnout in 2016 will change when a medical marijuana measure is the ballot. Second, Morgan says medical marijuana will be on the ballot (as God as his witness).
Morgan vows to win this war for the patients of Florida. And to prove just how committed he is, he once again wagers his own money, by matching every donation made on Monday to his newly revived cause.
Because money is exactly what it will take to get this job done.
Making the situation even more outrageous for Morgan, the email says, is how lawmakers “doubled down,” calling a special session for June 1 without any word on the medical marijuana issue.
“We’re going to have to do it ourselves,” he says. “We will win the war for the patients.”
Morgan closes with a pledge – to make those opposed to legalizing medical marijuana “feel some pain of their own in November 2016.”
For someone relaunching the effort — using much of his own money — to bring relief to thousands of suffering Floridians, it is a promise you can take to the bank.
