Email insights: Val Demings says women are getting it done

In an email Thursday morning, former Orlando Police Chief and current congressional candidate Val Demings reminded supporters of her history growing up, while promoting a message of empowerment for women in all parts of the community.

“As one of seven children to a maid and janitor,” the email said, “Val was inspired by her parents’ unyielding work ethic and life of service. Their sacrifices allowed her to be the leader she is today and she will take that leadership and work ethic to Washington.

“From her parents and her work, Val has a profound understanding of what it means to struggle to bring about progress. Val was the first female Orlando Police chief. Val, like many other women, was underestimated, but from the board room to politics, women are getting it done.

“Val is fearless and determined. She has been engaging and supporting Floridians for years and she’s not nearly done yet.”

Demings, who seeks Florida’s 10th Congressional District, promoted a similar message in 2012 during her first congressional run. This time, she’s not the only African-American female in the race.

State Sen.Geraldine Thompson announced her intentions earlier this week, and U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown is also reportedly weighing a run in the new 10th District, if her current 5th District is redrawn. The winner of the Democratic primary would challenge Republican incumbent Daniel Webster in November 2016.
