Fewer Keys guests, higher hotel rates during Fantasy Fest

Key West hotels are reporting that fewer people came to town for Fantasy Fest, but higher room rates compensated for the dip in occupancy.

The Key West Citizen reports that the average nightly cost of a hotel room for the main weekend of the 10-day Fantasy Fest jumped from about $238 last year to $413 this year.

Jodi Weinhofer, president of the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West, says hotel owners reported slightly fewer guests this year, but it wasn’t clear what contributed to the decrease.

Weinhofer says Key West business owners were more concerned with the increasing number of tour buses shuttling visitors to and from the mainland during Fantasy Fest. She says those visitors often bring their own food and beverages.
