The Jacksonville Jaguars host the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night in the only nationally televised game that night, giving it added significance in light of the Paris terror attacks this past Friday.
With that in mind, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry and Sheriff Mike Williams called a news conference Wednesday to discuss security preparations for the game, and to encourage Jaguars fans that despite the heightened security they should feel confident to come out and have a good time.
Curry stressed that he and Williams meet monthly to discuss “public safety” topics, ranging from the “big picture” on down to the “weeds.”
Williams, meanwhile, said little will change from the “basic framework for every game since 9/11,” except for a few “extra measures.”
Saying that there have been “no direct threats,” Williams added that the Sheriff’s Office has been connected with the NFL, as well as federal and state law enforcement.
Though “maybe a few more blue uniforms” might be seen, and a little more presence, football fans should not expect any more delays.
The mayor also fielded a press conference question about his statement regarding Syrian refugees. On Tuesday he joined Gov. Rick Scott in questioning the resettlement process.
“I love Syrian refugees,” the mayor said. “My statement was about the process.”
