House Speaker Steve Crisafulli has thrown his support behind Carlos Lopez-Cantera in the U.S. Senate race.
Lopez-Cantera’s campaign announced Tuesday that the Merritt Island Republican was endorsing the lieutenant governor in his bid to replace Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate.
“My choice in this important race is not based on politics, but on a desire to have authentic and effective representation in Washington,” said Crisafulli in a statement Tuesday. “We need action, not more empty promises. Working with Carlos over the years, I have been able to see first-hand his focused leadership. Carlos has a fire and drive that is greatly needed in Washington. I look forward to doing all I can to support his campaign.”
Lopez-Cantera is one of five Republicans vying for their party’s nomination to replace Rubio, who is not seeking re-election. In a statement, the Miami Republican said he was honored to have the support of Crisafulli, calling the outgoing House Speaker “a true Florida leader.”
“I look forward to continuing to work with Speaker Crisafulli throughout this campaign, and to serving as the next U.S. Senator from Florida, who will deliver commonsense results, not empty rhetoric,” said Lopez-Cantera in a prepared statement.
Lopez-Cantera has received the backing of Attorney General Pam Bondi and more than half of the Republicans in the Florida Legislature.
Lopez-Cantera will face David Jolly, Ron DeSantis, Todd Wilcox and Carlos Beruff in the Aug. 30 primary.
