On Thursday afternoon, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry will present a proclamation identifying this week as National Re-entry Week.
According to a release from the mayor’s office, the proclamation demonstrates Curry’s “commitment to programs, services and offerings that improve public safety.”
The Department of Justice designated this week as National Re-entry Week, with a focus on the challenges faced by reformed convicts after prison time.
“There are many barriers and challenges that our most vulnerable citizens face,” said Curry, in a statement. “I am committed to supporting efforts that reduce recidivism rates and create environments that improve the lives and communities of citizens seeking re-entry into society.”
Students and leaders from the City of Jacksonville’s D.A.W.N. program, established in 1998 to help Duval County Jail convicts learn life skills and basic education, will receive the proclamation from Mayor Curry Thursday at 3 p.m.
Along similar lines, Curry has made the Jacksonville Re-entry Center a focus in his first year in office, including securing $900,000 for it from Tallahassee this session.
Many local leaders throughout the country are issuing similar proclamations, and DOJ senior staff members are traveling the country to participate in events throughout the week.
