Meet Mike Miller, Republican running for re-election to House District 47

Mike Miller Florida House

More than 300 candidates are running for the 160 seats in the Florida House and Senate. And, try as we will, FloridaPolitics.com won’t be able to interview them all. So we are asking every candidate, including incumbents, to complete a questionnaire we believe offers an interesting, albeit, thumbnail sketch of who they are and why they are running.

If you are a candidate and would like to complete the questionnaire, email [email protected].

Today’s candidate spotlight features Mike Miller, a Republican running for House District 47.

Here he is in his own words:

Significant other? Kids?

Been married for 20 years as of June 29th to the former Nora Hardy. We have two children, Jack (16) and Katie (14).

Education background? Professional background?

Graduate of the University of Florida with a History degree. Received an MBA from Rollins College. Worked on Capitol Hill for U.S. Senator Connie Mack and then the NRSC focusing on federal campaigns. Came to Florida to work on U.S. Senate race with Bill McCollum and continued working on Federal races until 2010. Recently worked at Rollins College as a development officer.

What was your first job?

My first job was at the Amoco gas station in Potomac, MD.

In 25 words or less, why are you running for office?

I have always been inspired by individuals that value limited government. Determined to continue limiting the growth of government.

Did you speak with anybody in your political party before deciding on running? Receive any encouragement? From whom?

Spoke to the former President of Rollins College who was a strong believer in public service and encouraged me to engage in this endeavor.

Who do you count on for advice?

My dad and my wife. (Two Georgetown-educated attorneys.)

Who is your political consultant? Campaign manager?

Work with both John Dowless and Marc Reichelderfer. Manager pending.

Who was the first person to contribute to your campaign? Why did they donate?

First check was from Rob Godwin. 25+ year friend who believes as I do in limited government.

Who, if anyone, inspires you in state government?

Inspired by all my fellow members who pursue their beliefs with passion whether I agree with them or not.

Why do people mistrust elected officials and what are you going to do about it?

Partially because political conversation is not always black and white. Listening to the debate is frustrating. Not sure what can be done to change this.

Certainly the very few “bad apples” who behave immorally (and sometimes illegally) disproportionately sway public opinion of politicians. Again, not sure what can be done to change this …

What are 3 issues that you’re running on? (You’re not allowed to say education or “improving the schools”)

Limited and responsible government. Lower taxes.

What is a “disruptive” issue (i.e. ride-sharing) you are interested in?

Uber/Lyft has been a hot-button issue in Orlando. Continue to look for compromise.

What does your legislative district need from Tallahassee?

Transportation funding due to population growth and subsequent pressure on existing infrastructure.

Who was the best governor in Florida’s modern history?

Jeb Bush. Education accountability and handling of hurricanes was exemplary. Governor Scott has handled the recent events in Orlando with grace.

If you could amend the Florida Constitution, what would you change?

Strengthen the separation of powers to limit the continual overreach by the Supreme Court.

Are yard signs an important part of campaigning in your district?

Let’s you know where your neighbors stand …

What’s the first thing you read each morning?

WSJ, Sunburn, Sayfie, Orlando Sentinel, Drudge Report.

Where do you get your political news?

All the above, Florida Politics and Orlando Politics blogs.

Who do you think will be the next President of the United States?

I’ll leave the prognostication to the pundits.

60 Minutes or House of Cards?

House of Cards is much more entertaining.

Social media presence? Twitter handle?

Enjoy Facebook (I’m old). Trying to tweet more @mmiller375.

In 140 characters, what’s a Tweet that best describes your campaign message

Proud of Orlando, proud of our spirit. Proud to represent all of us in Tallahassee.

Hobbies?

Fishing with my son. Jogging with my daughter.

Favorite sport and sports team?

Baseball. Love the Washington Nationals and the Florida Gators!
