Meet Terrance Freeman, Republican running for House District 12

Terrance Freeman

There are more than 300 candidates running for the 160 seats in the Florida House and Senate. And, try as we will, FloridaPolitics.com won’t be able to interview all of them.

So we are asking every candidate, including incumbents, to complete a questionnaire we believe offers an interesting, albeit, thumbnail sketch of who they are and why they are running. If you are a candidate and would like to complete the questionnaire, email [email protected].

Today’s candidate spotlight features Terrance Freeman, a Republican running in Florida House District 12.

Here he is in his own words:

Significant other? Kids?

My wife, Rachel, and I are blessed with four beautiful girls, Evie, 8; Teryn, 6; Patricia, 4; and Lyndee, 2.

Education background? Professional background?

B.S. Physical Education, M.S. Health and Wellness, Doctoral Studies in Education

What was your first job?

Bagging groceries.

In 25 words or less, why are you running for office?

Simply put, I’m running for my four girls and their future. We need new conservative leadership to represent us in the Legislature.

Did you speak with anybody in your political party before deciding on running? Receive any encouragement? From whom?

I spoke extensively with my wife and other immediate family before deciding to run.

Who do you count on for advice?

My wife Rachel, Daniel Davis, and Bruce Barcelo.

Who is your political consultant? Campaign manager?

Bruce Barcelo

Who was the first person to contribute to your campaign? Why did they donate?

Donna Barrow. She believes in the message of “For the Future We Want”, and she loves my four girls!

Who, if anyone, inspires you in state government?

I admire Gov. Scott’s continuous commitment to ensuring the job market in Florida remains strong.

Why do people mistrust elected officials and what are you going to do about it?

People are tired of career politicians who seem more concerned about their next election than about staying committed to their principles. My three major opponents have over 40 years combined serving in elected office. While I thank them for their service to our community, it is time for new conservative leaders to take the mantle.

What are 3 issues that you’re running on? (You’re not allowed to say education or “improving the schools”)

  1. Public Safety — I had the opportunity to serve as one of nine original members on the Jax Journey oversight committee and saw firsthand that intervention and prevention are key to combating crime in Jacksonville. In addition to anti-crime initiatives, we need elected officials that have the support of law enforcement. Our campaign has been blessed to have the support and endorsement of both the local firefighters and police.
  1. Jobs — Economic development is key to the future of District 12. As a small business owner, I know that we need commonsense regulatory reform to help other entrepreneurs start their own businesses. Additionally, dredging the St. Johns River is a necessity for the future of Northeast Florida. I will be a leader in Tallahassee to pull together local, state and national interests to ensure we dredge the river for the expansion of JaxPort.
  1. Workforce Development — Our veteran population is an untapped resource. As Jacksonville continues to be the choice of business, it is important that we have the workforce to meet the demand. Our retired military are equipped to fill these positions as they are disciplined, reliable, and skilled. Education is important to me as well. It’s important that students grasp concepts that will prepare them for higher ed, but equally important is that for those students who choose to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation, that they are equipped with training in skills that will afford them the opportunity to contribute to the workforce right away.

What is a “disruptive” issue (i.e. ride-sharing) you are interested in?

I’m a gun owner, a concealed weapons license holder, and NRA member. We must ensure that our Second Amendment rights are protected in Florida.

What does your legislative district need from Tallahassee?

As mentioned earlier, we need a representative that will lead the charge on ensuring the St. Johns River is dredged.

Who was the best governor in Florida’s modern history?

Jeb Bush

If you could amend the Florida Constitution, what would you change?

I would focus in areas that would promote creating a more business friendly environment, so that small businesses can expand and create jobs.

Are yard signs an important part of campaigning in your district?

I find that talking to voters one-on-one either by knocking on doors or at events is the best way to campaign in District 12.

What’s the first thing you read each morning?

Each morning I read my Bible (Fellowship of Christian Athletes Competitor’s edition) during my morning devotion time.

Where do you get your political news?

Florida Times-Union and Sayfie Review.

Who do you think will be the next President of the United States?

It’s too early to tell, but I support Donald Trump for President.

60 Minutes or House of Cards?

Neither. I’ll take Sportscenter!

Social media presence? Twitter handle?

https://www.facebook.com/TerranceFreeman2016

https://twitter.com/TFreemanJax

https://www.instagram.com/terrancefreeman2016/

In 140 characters, what’s a Tweet that best describes your campaign message?

I’m a small business owner, former educator and a conservative Republican running to bring new leadership to Tallahassee.

Hobbies?

Anytime I can spend with my girls golfing or coaching baseball (high school and 10-year-old baseball teams).

Favorite sport and sports team?

Baseball. Support all Florida State athletic teams “Go Noles”, Jaguars and Buccaneers.
