Former Judge Charles Cofer collected $6,500 during the week from July 23 to July 29, giving him a total of $166,000 raised, with over $85,000 on hand as he battles incumbent Matt Shirk to become the Republican nominee for 4th Circuit public defender.
Cofer, in what has become a chippy election complete with allegations of tampered signs and party switches, brought in donations mostly in the $100 to $500 range during the last full week of July.
Shirk, who has struggled with fundraising throughout his re-election campaign, had roughly $28,000 on hand through July 22; his most recent filing isn’t in as of yet.
Shirk was a memorable fixture at Wednesday night’s Donald Trump rally in Jacksonville.
Located behind the GOP nominee, Shirk was seen applauding Trump as he floated the idea of America not honoring its NATO commitment to defend “one of those countries no one in this room has ever heard of” against Russia, which up until very recently was the reason NATO was assembled in the first place.
