A bill introduced by Democrat U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch that would make it easier impose sanctions on Iran if it violates the terms of the Iran nuclear deal cleared the House Tuesday.
“The Iran Sanctions Act has served as the backbone of our Iran policy for two decades and ultimately helped force Iran to the negotiating table,” Deutch said. “Now that the deal is in effect, the Iranian regime must fully understand that violations of the deal will be met with swift and painful snap-back sanctions. By extending this sanctions program, we will continue to lead the international community in ensuring full compliance and vigorous enforcement of the deal.”
The bill, HR 6297, would extend sanctions law to make it easier for the United States to re-impose nuclear-related sanction if Iran is found to have violated the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Fellow Florida Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen joined Deutch and California Rep. Ed Royce, New York Rep. Eliot Engel, Texas Rep. Ted Poe and Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer in introducing the bill.
