FITConFL examines future impact of ‘Internet of Things’

If there a single innovation today with the potential to affect every aspect of the way we work and live, it is the “Internet of Things” (IoT).

With broadband internet now widely available, decreasing costs to connect and more devices having Wi-Fi capabilities and sensors, IoT could be one of the biggest disruption technologies of the modern age.

Right now, the average American household has seven Wi-Fi enabled devices; Florida Internet & Television (FIT) — the cable and internet industry’s leading trade organization — estimates that number will jump to 20 in the next two decades.

FITConFL — FIT’s Future of Internet and Television Conference this week in Miami — is holding a panel discussion Thursday on IoT and its role in future technology for the home.

Harbin Bolton

Chairing the panel is Harbin Bolton, vice president of Cox Business in Florida and Georgia. Cox Business is a subsidiary of Cox Enterprises, a family-owned communications, media and automotive services company. Cox holdings include The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book.

Bolton, an expert in connecting business of all sizes with the internet, has been with Cox since 2000, becoming VP for the Florida/Georgia region in 2008. The University of Georgia graduate and resident of Gainesville leads the nearly $100-million division responsible for providing businesses with internet, phone, TV and network connectivity.

FITConFL is the annual conference of top industry leaders to discuss the latest state and federal legislative and regulatory policy affecting the cable, internet and television industries. Attendees hear from panels comprised of tech and content experts on a series of issues on how to meet workforce needs, explore the growing influence of IoT on everyday life and more.

FIT members include some of the largest cable and internet providers in Florida, including Atlantic Broadband, Comcast, Charter Communications, Cox Communications and Mediacom.

FITConFL continues through Friday at Trump National Doral Miami, 4400 Northwest 87th Ave. in Doral. The event’s full schedule is here.

FIT’s new website is internetandtvfl and Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts can be found through @FLInternetTV.
