One is the name-partner of a Top 10 governmental affairs firm, while another is a well-respected veteran of The Process who works at one of the premiere law firms in the country. Another is a Golden Rotunda-award winner and only the third woman to make it to the Final Four of this competition, while the other is Jon Costello and there really isn’t much you can say about him except that he spells his own name wrong.
Together, they are the Final Four of TallyMadness – an online voting competition to determine the “best” lobbyist in Tallahassee: Jeff Johnston, Hayden Dempsey, Heather Turnbull, and Costello.
#8 seed Johnston knocked off a #1 seed, Travis Blanton, and a popular young lobbyist, Alan Suskey, before taking down “The Professor” Fred Karlinsky, who, despite the efforts of some of his law students, was not able to hold off Johnston.
#4 seed Dempsey of Greenberg Traurig is the highest ranked seed still in the competition and is probably relieved he did not have to face off agains this GT colleague Karlinsky. Dempsey’s path to the final four was no easy journey as bested a #1 seed, Nick Iarossi, along with fan favorites Allison Carvajal, Tracy Mayernick, and Andrea Reilly.
#14 seed Turnbull won a match-up of Cinderellas by beating Johnson and Blanton’s Darrick McGhee after battling through Charlie Dudley, Ron LaFace, and Robert Coker.
#15 seed Costello is in the Final Four most likely because of his efforts to hack the voting. There’s really no other way to explain it. Here’s hoping Turnbull puts him out of his misery while advancing to the championship.
Johnston vs. Dempsey; Turnbull vs. Costello. Three out of four ain’t bad.
Voting to determine who will play in the championship match-up ends Thursday.
