Miami journalist Maria Elvira Salazar has pulled in support from conservative super PAC FreedomWorks for America in her bid to replace Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in Florida’s 27th Congressional District.
That support will come in the form of get-out-the-vote tactics as Salazar competes with a whopping eight other Republicans in a jam-packed primary.
“Maria Elvira Salazar has the advantage every Republican candidate is looking for this year: authentic grassroots enthusiasm surrounding her campaign,” said Executive Director of FreedomWorks for America Noah Wall. “The feedback we received from activists across the district was overwhelmingly supportive of sending Salazar to Washington.”
He continued “Salazar will fight for policies that bring jobs back to the 27th District and make Washington work for the people, not the other way around.”
Salazar, a former news anchor for Telemundo and CNN en Español, is looking for every way possible to separate herself from the field. In addition to her eight Republican opponents, five Democrats and one independent candidate have also jumped in the race to replace Ros-Lehtinen.
The longtime CD 27 representative announced she would not be running for re-election in 2018. That turned this longtime Republican seat into a possible get for Democrats. The Cook Political Report has the open seat in the “Lean Democratic” category.
Wall made note of the challenge from the left but believes Salazar is the best candidate to keep the seat red. “Democrats are fundraising like crazy to flip this seat, so it will be a very competitive general election. Maria Elvira Salazar is the obvious choice for Republicans who want to send a strong and principled candidate into the general election and protect this seat.”
The party primaries will be August 28, followed by the November 6 general election.
