Marco Rubio pretty sure Donald Trump doesn’t mean it when he calls on foreign investigations

Senator figures President made comment to provoke reporters.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio told reporters he doubts President Donald Trump really wants China investigating Joe Biden.

Florida’s senior Senator was in Marathon on Friday to chair a special hearing on Florida’s Coastal Economy. But reporters asked about remarks Trump made Thursday on the South Lawn of the White House.

Trump, shortly after saying if the Chinese “don’t do what we want, we have tremendous power,” raised the subject of an international power investigating former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

“China should start an investigation into the Bidens because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine,” Trump said.

The remarks dominated the next 24 hours of news, mostly because demanding a foreign power investigate the Bidens is exactly why the House is considering an impeachment inquiry.

But Rubio didn’t think remarks to the Ukrainian government warranted impeachment and he doesn’t think Trump’s words Thursday do either.

“I don’t know if that’s a real request or if it’s just him needling the press knowing that you guys were going to get outraged by it,” Rubio told media representatives in Marathon. “He’s pretty good at getting everyone fired up.

“He’s been doing that for a while and the media responded right on task.”

Considering Rubio remains a chief critic of China’s alleged human rights violations, reporters pressed on whether it’s OK to make such comments involving a notorious global superpower.

“I don’t think it’s a real request,” Rubio repeated. “Again, I think he did it to get you guys. I think he did it to provoke you to ask me and others and get outraged by it. Like I said, he plays it like a violin and everyone falls right into it.

“That’s not a real request.”

After CBS4 reporter Jim DeFede posted video of the remarks on Twitter, Rubio was the top trending topic in the country.

Trump, meanwhile, denied to members of the press that he will tie any trade deal in China to an investigation of the Bidens.

I just wish Sen. Rubio would follow his moral obligation rather than straight-party politics. We have all his comments about the President when he was running for office. Now he just cottons to the voice of Mitch. As a longtime Republican, I can no longer accept Trumps degrading of the Constitution for his personnel gain.

I’m glad to hear that. Maybe decent people who care about our country, from both parties, can work together to put our country back together again.
