Senate President-designate Wilton Simpson will help boost a pair of 2020 Senate campaigns with a fundraising reception next week.
The Dec. 9 event will benefit the campaign accounts of Republican state Reps. Ray Rodrigues and Ana Maria Rodriguez. The joint fundraiser is set for 5 p.m. at Savour, 115 E. Park Ave., in Tallahassee.
Rodrigues is running for Senate District 27, the seat currently held by term-limited Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto. He’s so far unopposed and has plenty of cash piled up to help secure a victory in the deep-red Southwest Florida district.
As of Oct. 31, he had about $1.4 million in the bank between his campaign account and two political committees, Free Markets for Florida and Friends of Ray Rodrigues.
Rodriguez, meanwhile, is running in what’s expected to be the most competitive Senate race of the 2020 cycle.
She faces Democratic state Rep. Javier Fernandez in the race for Senate District 39, which is currently held by exiting Republican Sen. Anitere Flores.
On the fundraising front, she has built an early lead with about $470,000 banked between her accounts compared to about $120,000 for Fernandez.
