Florida’s elected officials and leading politicians are reacting to an assassination attempt of Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Trump’s campaign says the worst was averted. And the gunman, whose bullet hit Trump and grazed his left ear, was killed. After the shooting, Trump headed to New Jersey, where he has a home.
President Joe Biden offered a statement and remarks to the nation, but his response elicited criticism from one Florida Senator as insufficient.
The President initially said he intended to reach out to Trump, thanking Secret Service and condemning the “sick” attempt on Trump’s life, saying the rally “should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem.”
“Everybody must condemn it,” Biden said, leading one frequent critic to say President Biden didn’t say enough in his remarks.
“Biden’s speech was not the inspiring, unifying speech that’s necessary from the president of the United States in this moment. He can’t even say it was an assassination attempt. That’s not leadership,” said U.S. Sen. Rick Scott.
“Democrats and liberals in the media have called Trump a fascist. They’ve compared him to Hitler. They’ve tried to lock him up. They tried to remove his Secret Service protection. Just this week, Biden said he wanted to put Trump in the crosshairs. This isn’t some unfortunate incident. This was an assassination attempt by a madman inspired by the rhetoric of the radical left,” Scott added.
Others, while not critiquing Biden’s remarks, framed the incident as an attempt to end Trump’s life.
“They tried to kill my friend,” tweeted U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz.
“First, they tried to silence him. Then, they tried to imprison him. Now they try to kill him. May God protect President Trump and keep him and his family in your prayers. America and the world need the President back in office,” U.S. Rep. Cory Mills added.
“Those who hate USA will stop at nothing to prevent Trump from being re-elected — even, it appears, assassination attempts,” added U.S. Rep. Brian Mast.
“We need to call this what it is — an assassination attempt on President Trump. This is not what we stand for and the people responsible need to be swiftly brought to justice. This is not the democracy that we represent in America,” said U.S. Rep. Aaron Bean.
Another Republican focused on the recovery rather than the incident in early reaction.
“And walked off like a Boss. #CommanderInChief,” asserted U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz.
Another U.S. Rep. from Florida, Laurel Lee, a Republican who represents areas of Hillsborough, Polk and Pasco counties, posted on X, “Please join me in praying for President Trump,” in a brief statement.
“Praying for President Trump and all those attending the rally in Pennsylvania today,” said U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, who is in line to potentially be Trump’s running mate.
Rubio then screenshot a CNN story referring to the “incident” when it wasn’t fully verifiable what happened, and snarked: “Really? No mention of the attempt to kill him? Even in a horrifying moment such as this they just can’t help themselves.”
“This violence in our politics has got to end,” said Rep. Byron Donalds on Fox News.
Rep. Kat Cammack urged prayers for the former President.
Gov. Ron DeSantis said he and Casey “are praying for Donald Trump and his family.”
The First Lady added “The governor and I are thinking of the Trump family and praying for his safety.”
“PRAYING FOR DONALD TRUMP. WE LOVE YOU MR. PRESIDENT,” said CFO Jimmy Patronis.
Attorney General Ashley Moody had a response also, saying, “Trump injured at (a) rally in Pennsylvania. Praying for President Trump, his family and our entire nation.”
Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson was resolute: This is an attack on who we are as Americans. All of us. With more resolve than ever before, we will stand with President Trump to Make America Great Again.”
State Sen. Clay Yarborough added, “Our family is praying for President Trump and our country. Freedom and liberty are on the line.”
Florida House Speaker-designate Daniel Perez added: “This violence is a direct result of the deranged hysteria the opposition has directed toward President Trump. This attempted assassination should shake the core of every American citizen. Stephanie and I pray for the quick and speedy recovery of President Trump and look forward.”
“There is no place for this type (of) violence and hatred in our society. We must unite as a country, and we must be able to disagree without resorting to such horrific actions,” argued Rep. Fabian Basabe.
“This will not stop us. We will prevail! We will Make America Great Again. #TrumpStrong,” The Republican Party of Florida tweeted.
Florida GOP Chair Evan Power added: “Our prayers are with President Trump and his family. Our country is as divided as ever because radical Democrats hate the thought of a strong America. We stand united. We stand for making America great again. We need President Trump back in office now more than ever!”
“Wow. Looks like from the area behind stage. I hope this is accurate and that the animal is dead,” added former RPOF Chair Christian Ziegler.
Democratic leaders began to have their say, but their takes were different, avoiding the “assassination attempt” language in the early going.
“There is no place for political violence in this country — period. The Florida Democratic Party unequivocally condemns today’s violence and thanks the Secret Service, law enforcement, and first responders for their swift response,” the state party tweeted shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Rep. Lois Frankel added: “I’m horrified by what happened at former President Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. Political violence has no place in our country — period.”
“Terrifying to see the videos and images coming out of former President Trump’s rally this afternoon. I’m praying for the safety of every single person. Political violence is disgusting and should be fiercely condemned,” said Rep. Maxwell Frost.
“It appears someone just tried to assassinate former President Trump. Praying for the former President. This is not how we settle our differences. This is why crazy people shouldn’t have guns. President Biden should do an address to calm the nation,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz.
“We wish Fmr President Trump a quick recovery. We also thank law enforcement for their rapid response. We will be monitoring the situation over the next few days as more information comes to light. In our democracy, violence is never the answer,” said Rep. Darren Soto.
Rep. Frederica Wilson added: “Political violence is never the answer and every political leader must make that crystal clear. I have my differences with President Trump, but our country cannot delve into one where we attack political leaders. Wishing him a speedy recovery.”
Senate Leader Lauren Book offered her own reflection.
“Violence has no place in our democracy. Regardless of who you support or what you believe, we must resolve our differences at the ballot box — never through violent attacks. Praying for the former president,” Book tweeted.
“Political violence is wrong and never the answer. We should all be committed to community safety regardless of politics,” said Rep. Anna V. Eskamani.
Rep. Angie Nixon added: “Our democracy should be free from violence. My thoughts and prayers are with the families that lost a loved one and all that have been impacted in today’s shooting in Pennsylvania.”
“Political differences should never lead to violence. Glad that former President Trump is ok and hoping no one else was hurt. No matter how frayed, our democracy and our political culture are better than this,” added Palm Beach State Attorney Dave Aronberg.
“Political violence is indefensible and unacceptable in the United States of America. My prayers are with the former President and his family. Let’s gather ourselves in this moment and remember who we are,” Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan urged.

The second we start blaming guns for people getting shot is when we have lost. Just look at Europe for example. Removing guns wont prevent violent murder attempts. Hey all you dumb deplorable Trump- cultists out there. You’ve all lost the ability to think for your-selves, the sheer hypocrisy in your (almost) laughable utterances is truly deafening.
‘Convict’ Don, who clearly belongs in prison, is a lunatic who trash-talks your police officers & FBI after the Jan6 riot yet praises them for shielding & protecting him at today’s rally. How hypocritical, expedient & convenient. I wonder if he’s still proud, as he himself stated, that he did nothing to curb the sale of your beloved guns to which you are all clearly addicted. Apparently there were even gun traders & retailers ‘on location’ at the rally today. Can’t you see the irony of that ? I mean, are all MAGA-morons that obtuse ?
So the gun ‘incident’ at today’s PA rally will be just the start of open-warfare & assassination attempts targeting Trump’s political, judicial & media ‘enemies’. And in a so-called ‘civilized’ society that contains more guns (including weapons of mass-murder like the AR-15 used by today’s shooter) than it does citizens, surely this violent act was always going to happen. Your country has massively more gun-related deaths per head of population than the rest of all developed countries. There are more gun-shops in the US than there are coffee shops.
Here’s some stats for your consideration;
Last year 2023 there were 43,000 gun-related deaths in the USA, including >630 mass shootings. That’s almost 2 per day …
And most shameful is the number of school shootings in the US, a staggering 288 since 2009- as compared to Canada (2), France (2), Germany (1), and none at all in Japan, Italy & UK….yet what is the remedy to protect innocent school-kids from slaughter at the hands of a lunatic carrying an AR-15 Assault Rifle ? – a ludicrous suggestion to arm the teachers ?!? Omg – total insanity. How could a school teacher protect a classroom full of kids armed only with a hand-gun from a murderous dude carrying a Bump-Stocked AR-15, essentially a machine gun, & likely carrying multiple magazines which would surely increase the death toll significantly…😤😱🤬😔

This is not a time to point fingers, this is a time to reflect on how we can come together as a nation to lower the amount of deaths from gun violence. As a gun owner, I believe we need to pass sensible gun laws to prevent gun violence, 87% of our country wants better legislation. In addition, the military like AR15 needs to be banned and only used by law enforcement and our soldiers. The #1 cause of childhood deaths in our country is from firearms.
