Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to voice his frustrations with the Florida House and his fears about his legacy.
He’s even taking those arguments to speeches to national groups.
“They’re basically running for office on the Florida successes, the Florida model, and then they’re getting in and they’re trying to undercut that, thinking that somehow their voters aren’t going to know that that’s what they’re doing, that they’re not doing what they were told to do, what they what they told voters that they would do,” DeSantis said during a speech to the National Rental Home Council.
“It’s really, really sad to see.”
While DeSantis said his team is “not going to let any of this stuff fly,” he cautioned that people don’t understand the legislative branch’s threat to the “model.”
“This is not hardwired here. You know, we’ve had success. We have momentum. But there’s a lot of people in this political system here who would absolutely want to fritter that away and who would return back to days when we weren’t leading on all these different issues,” DeSantis warned.
“As long as I’m here, I’m going to be a force, you know, to continue the momentum and to continue to lead, but that’s just what’s kind of under the surface here. So I think that that’s something that people should really, really be concerned about.”
The complaints are increasingly familiar. DeSantis said Monday that the House has “this massive supermajority that they built off the work of many others,” and is using it “trying to undo a lot of the stuff that I and others worked for over many, many years.”
Last month, he accused the House of having “not addressed pressing issues that Floridians care about.”
“We need relief from the condo crisis. We need to enact permanent protections for medical freedom. We need a universal E-Verify (and to) strengthen our existing laws against illegal immigration, and we need a Florida first tax package that will reduce the number one tax that is hurting Floridians, which is property tax. People need relief. They want it and we need to deliver it for them,” DeSantis said.
House Speaker Daniel Perez has addressed DeSantis’ recent volley of complaints.
“For some reason, it seems the last week or so, the Governor has been a little more emotional and has been upset,” Perez said last week.
Perez hasn’t had a media availability in the last six days. But there’s reason to believe he will be asked about DeSantis’ disses yet again.
