Rick Scott announces seven appointments

On Friday, Gov. Rick Scott announced seven appointments to state boards and commissions.

Board of Governors of the State University System

Scott began by appointing Sydney Kitson to the Board of Governors of the State University System.

Kitson, 58, of West Palm Beach, is CEO of Kitson & Partners. He received his bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University.

Kitson is also well-known for his professional football career with the National Football League, playing offensive guard for both the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. He is appointed to fill a vacant seat for a term ending Jan. 6, 2017.

District Board of Trustees, Daytona State College

Scott next announced four reappointments to the District Board of Trustees of Daytona State College. Last year, the District Board of Trustees of Daytona State College had the distinction of becoming the only higher education board in the state voting to lower the cost of tuition.

Forough Hosseini, 54, of Ormond Beach, is the Senior Vice President of ICI Homes, Inc. She received her bachelor’s degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a master’s degree from the University of Central Florida. Hosseini is reappointed for a term ending on May 31, 2019.

Betty Holness, 72, of Ormond Beach, formerly served as the assistant to the county manager of Volusia County. She received her master’s degree from Butler University and is reappointed for a term ending on May 31, 2019.

Stanley Escudero, 74, of Daytona Beach, is the president of Shield Bearer, LLC and formerly served as the United States Ambassador to the Republics of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and is reappointed for a term ending on May 31, 2019.

Lloyd Freckleton, 68, of Flagler Beach, is a retired United States Army Colonel and former warden for the New York State Department of Corrections. He received his bachelor’s degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and is reappointed for a term ending on May 31, 2019.

Board of Pilot Commissioners

Scott reappointed Cheryl Phipps and appointed Vincent Oatis to the Board of Pilot Commissioners, the group responsible for licensing and regulating harbor pilots.

Phipps, 58, of Fort Lauderdale, is a harbor pilot captain for the Port Everglades Pilots Association. Her reappointment is for a term ending Oct. 31, 2020.

Oatis, 39, of Apopka, is the director of Grant Thornton, LLP. He succeeds Carlos Trueba and is appointed for a term ending Oct. 31, 2020.

All the above appointments and reappointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.
