Florida schools can comply with the state’s new recess mandate without having to take children outside.
The Florida Department of Education on Friday told school superintendents that there’s nothing in a new state law that dictates where recess must take place.
State legislators earlier this year passed a law that requires elementary schools to set aside 20 minutes each day for “free-play recess” although charter schools were exempted.
For the past two years mothers of school children pushed for recess, saying children need a break from schoolwork.
Department officials sent a memo to superintendents asking them to report to the state by Sept. 1 whether or not they are complying with the new mandate.
That memo also urged districts to establish weather guidelines to ensure student safety.

I have a better idea. Cut school and state college administrator salaries in half and double all teacher and adjunct professor wages in Florida. At last count, Indian River State College had 131 admin making over $100,000 a year, more than the US Attorney’s Office for the district. It’s time Florida teachers and professors no longer live in poverty while their bloated admin stuff their faces with lobster and scotch. While you’re at it, start paying Florida teachers and adjunct professors for all hours worked including prep and grading.
Indict corrupt racketeers and their sycophantic cronies destroying the public trust in Florida. Not sure government officials understand how fed up workers including teachers are with this corrupt system of oppression destroying the dignity of the People of Florida.
Feel free to sign and share the People’s July 4, 2016 corrupt racketeering (RICO) petition to the United States Justice Department and 2017-18 Florida Constitution Revision Commission. Might be worthwhile to dig into Rick Scott and Russia related real estate deals.
If a Florida resident, please sign and share the People of Florida’s petition: https://www.change.org/p/people-of-the-state-of-florida-v-rick-scott-et-al
