Democratic state Senate candidate Janet Cruz encouraged voters to bring friends to the polls and showed up with some prominent ones of her own—namely U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez and Senate Democratic Leader Audrey Gibson.
Cruz held the first of two get-out-the-vote events at her Tampa campaign headquarters, before rallying people to go cast ballots through early voting.
She cast a vote herself, and released a video online encourage voters to organize to vote in groups for Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum.
“That’s how we change the state,” Cruz said.
She turned to Velazquez, the first Puerto Rican women elected to the U.S. House, to help rally Hispanic voters.
Cruz hopes to ride a groundswell of Democratic energy to defeating state Sen. Dana Young in Senate District 18 on Election Day.
Later today, Cruz plans to campaign with Velazquez again, this time rallying votes alongside Gillum.
The Democratic gubernatorial candidate will attend a Senate Victory GOTV rally at McFarland Park in Tampa.
The race in District 18 has risen to be one of the more expensive in Florida this year. Young maintains a strong fundraising edge.
Gibson’s presence at the event showed the important to Florida Democrats’ hopes of retaking the state Senate, or at least closing the margins there.
