Shevrin Jones’ Senate campaign says more than 300 people attended his kickoff event Friday evening in The Hyundai Club at Hard Rock Stadium.

Jones, who is term-limited in the House, is running for Senate District 35 in 2020. Jones took a flourishing tone in addressing supporters about his decision to seek a Senate seat.

“We are here to witness a movement, not a moment,” Jones said.

“Moments come and people forget; movements come, and we change a community, a state, a nation. All of us are running for this Senate seat, because there is too much at stake.”

Former lawmaker Daphne Campbell, former state Rep. Cynthia Stafford, and Miami Gardens City Councilman Erhabor Ighodaro have also filed to run in SD 35.

Jones earned the support of several local lawmakers as he formally launched his campaign. Broward County Commissioner Barbara Sharief spoke about her motivation for supporting Jones’ run.

“Shervin Jones has a track record of standing up for what he believes in and defending Broward County and its residents,” Sharief said.

“He defends home rule and he would never sell us out for personal gain.

And Nancy Metayer, a Broward County Soil and Water Conservation Board Member who is currently running to be Mayor of Coral Springs, says she’s looked up to Jones while running her own campaign.

“Rep. Jones is an inspiration to me and so many others in Broward County,” Metayer said.

“He has been a leader on education, civil rights, and so many other issues important to the people in his district. Shevrin will be an amazing Senator and advocate for the people of his district. I support Shevrin because he’s a strong ally for the Haitian community, and I look forward to collaborating with him to better the lives of everyday South Floridians.”

Jones has already launched a campaign ad in the SD 35 contest. He also held a fundraiser in Tallahassee in mid-February.

“[We have a] bold plan to help this district become even more vibrant, to help the people who live here to succeed and to be safe, to help our children get the best education possible,’ Jones said.

“I look forward to continuing this fight on behalf of the people of South Florida.”
