Tristan Wood
John Kuczwanski, the Legislative Affairs Director for the State Board of Administration, was killed in a shootout triggered by a road rage incident in north Tallahassee.
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office took one person into custody after the Jan. 6 incident, however that person has since been released and no charges have been filed, according to a LCSO news release.
The office issued an initial statement reporting a fatal shooting that occurred last Thursday, shortly after 5 p.m., near the intersection of Bannerman Road and Thomasville Road, following an altercation between two drivers. Thursday’s release confirmed Kuczwanski was killed in the incident.
The investigation into what occurred is still ongoing.
There are conflicting reports about what happened, though it appears events escalated to fatal violence following a traffic incident.
Sources familiar with details of the investigation told Florida Politics that Kuczwanski ย caused the auto accident that began the chain of events, and that he began the shootout that led to his own death.
The sources said the incident began after Kuczwanski’s BMW drifted out of its lane while heading north on Thomasville Road. That’s when the BMW hit a white Prius.
Both cars pulled into a parking lot. The driver of the Prius confronted Kuczwanski about hitting him, the sources said. The Prius’ driver then returned to his car to wait for law enforcement’s arrival after confronting Kuczwanski. That is when, according to Florida Politics’ sources, Kuczwanski rammed his BMW into the Prius on the driver’s door, and began pushing the car sideways in the parking lot.
Kuczwanski then shot a gun at the white Prius, according to the sources. The Prius driver drew a gun and fired back into the windshield of Kuczwanskiโs BMW. Kuczwanski was hit and killed, according to the sources.
The driver of the Prius then exited their vehicle on the passenger side and took cover not knowing if Kuczwanski was about to fire back.
However, Kuczwanski’s wife, Rebekah Kuczwanski, said in a Twitter thread that her husband was a victim while confirming he lost his life. She claimed that he was trapped and “assassinated” and was trying to escape the person shooting at him.
Those comments were made on a thread, posted by Florida Politics publisher Peter Schorsch, announcing Kuczwanski’s death.
“He was on his way home early to pick us up for a farewell dinner for our daughter,” she wrote. “He called to say he was on his way to beat traffic. He was excited for dinner and to see us. He told us he loved us then never came home.”
She added that his family deserves time to heal and privacy.
โOur whole lives are shattered. The children and I, his friends and family, so many who adored this wonderful, kind, loving man who would do anything for anyone. We are all devastated. The whole world lost a great man!โ she wrote.
The incident took place less than two miles away from Kuczwanskiโs home. He leaves behind his wife, and two children.
Dennis MacKee, speaking on behalf of the State Board of Administration, said he could not confirm that Kuczwanski was the person killed in the road rage incident, but confirmed that he died Thursday, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
โHe was a quiet fellow,โ MacKee said. โEverything in his world was about his family.โ
Previously, Kuczwanski pleaded no contest to assault and disorderly conduct charges in 2014 related to a separate road rage incident at the same intersection, as first reported by Tallahassee Reports.
According to theย probable cause affidavitย for that case, deputies were dispatched after a driver called to report that another driver had โpointed a small, black in color handgun with a mounted laser at him while stopped next to him at the intersection of Thomasville Road and Bannerman Road.โ
Law enforcement found Kuczwanski still inside the vehicle matching the description from the caller when they responded to that 2014 incident. A deputy verified that Kuczwanski had a weapon matching the callerโs description and arrested him on the scene. He was later sentenced to probation, which was completed in 2018.
Kuczwanski, 52, graduated from Florida State University in 1992 with a degree in political science. His career in Tallahassee included working as former Sen. Debby Sandersonโs chief of staff, communications director of the Department of Management Services, and more than 11 years with the State Board of Administration.
The final tweet on his Twitter account, an announcement that he had entered an online raffle for a firearm worth $5,000, was posted on Dec. 9, 2021.

Witnesses have stated the BMW driver shot at the Prius as well. From the reports I’ve seen the drive of the Prius only returned fire. He didn’t start the stupid shoot out, he merely finished it. If true, obviously self defense

Gun was designed to shoot paper targets. Hundreds of millions of guns in the U.S. and that is what they primarily shoot.
Just as many people die from guns as with cars. However if suicides are ruled out, more than twice as many people die because of cars than guns.
Note that the driver of the Prius had a gun and killed Kuczwanski with it. In other words, the Prius driver protected themselves with a gun from someone who was trying to harm them.

No, it’s not. I’m Australian and I own 4. It’s illegal to own one without a proper license and correct storage (because we don’t fetishise them like America does), and certain types of guns are banned (automatic and semi-automatic). No, “self-defense” has not been deemed an unneccessary reason to own a gun, because we don’t need a reason to own one. We just to pass the police checks and licensing requirements. We also don’t spend our time fantasising about people breaking into our homes so we can kill them.
And no, “the government” is absolutely bloody not “sending people with guns” into our cities checking for “vaccine passports” or denying our people from going shopping or being in public without “showing papers”. That’s absolute nonsense.
Do you have any idea how big Australia is? How many cities we have? What do you think we have for government – one ruling body that can do whatever it wants? We don’t. There are more guns per capita in oz than before the laws regarding the types of guns were changed in Oz. Automatic weapons a not wildly owned anymore. One can still have an automatic weapon but it can only be kept and used at a shooting range. So one can still have a gun for self defense. A similar incident happened to my Son and His friend, got the tag number & all, & TPD & LCSO did nothing. Sadly, it seems like nothing is done until these types shoot & kill somebody (see Michael Drejka), or in this case, shot & killed themselves. Maybe not scapegoat people with multiple personalities. That’s really scummy fear mongering and hurts innocent people just so you can pretend someone doesn’t have issues regarding managing their emotions, or other flaws that could be accessible if observed and reacted to with honesty. Given the “classic values” typical of a Republican proponent, never mind a representative outright, he probably is taught to shove his feelings deep down where nobody can see them, leaving him prone to explosions at inopportune times such as road rage. Does that mean that’s why this happened? Maybe, maybe not, but it’s more likely by miles than finding the mythical murderhobo multiple personality unicorn who seeks opportunities to hurt people.

Very unfortunate. I knew a guy once (just in general passing) like the late john, quick to anger, bully, threatening violence anytime he lost his temper. He did it to everyone. Unfortunately his life ended just as tragically too. A 90 year old business partner shot him in the head after a threatening argument. The 90 year old said he wasnt taking deceased abuse any longer and it was totally worth it. He served 2 years of a life sentence before dying of old age himself. Lesson to be learned always keep your cool! And go see a therapist and figure out your deep rooted anger already before you die or do jail.

The real problem here is not even being mentioned. I don’t care what the dead dudes political affiliation is (was), he brandished a gun in a road rage incident. That should have been a felony, aggravated assault, BUT because he was seen by the elite effing system to “be someone” he was allowed to plead no contest to lesser charges. Had the da & judge done their jobs he would have been a convicted felon, not allowed to have a gun, and when the prison sentence was done he may have thought twice before bullying anyone with his hooootsie tooootsie effin POS car. He obviously has (had) anger management issues which also should have been a red flag in the process for obtaining a weapon. I don’t understand why these forums have to be reduced to the fighting & name calling and the “let’s blame a group of people game”, that just shows how uninformed the poster really is, and it happens on both sides. A constructive “spirited discussion” does not have to resort to what happened in this thread. In all honesty, no one can justify his actions. I don’t care who was at fault, who did what to whom. Rational, normal people do not ram other peoples cars and start shooting because they feel they were wronged behind the wheel of a vehicle. And the dead guy had already proven he was not mature enough to be trusted with a weapon, much less the kind one could conceal. It is really sad commentary on what has happened to this country and it has NOTHING to do with guns. It does have everything to do with the loss of respect in this country, the loss of effective parenting in this country and the apparent belief that one can do what ever they want without consequences. They guy shooting at someone and ramming his car into another persons car is not the problem folks, they are symptoms, symptoms of a much greater problem.
