John Kuczwanski killed in Tallahassee road rage incident

John-Kuczwanski ART
Kuczwanski was arrested for a separate road rage incident at the same intersection in 2014.

John Kuczwanski, the Legislative Affairs Director for the State Board of Administration, was killed in a shootout triggered by a road rage incident in north Tallahassee.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office took one person into custody after the Jan. 6 incident, however that person has since been released and no charges have been filed, according to a LCSO news release.

The office issued an initial statement reporting a fatal shooting that occurred last Thursday, shortly after 5 p.m., near the intersection of Bannerman Road and Thomasville Road, following an altercation between two drivers. Thursday’s release confirmed Kuczwanski was killed in the incident.

The investigation into what occurred is still ongoing.

There are conflicting reports about what happened, though it appears events escalated to fatal violence following a traffic incident.

Sources familiar with details of the investigation told Florida Politics that Kuczwanski  caused the auto accident that began the chain of events, and that he began the shootout that led to his own death.

The sources said the incident began after Kuczwanski’s BMW drifted out of its lane while heading north on Thomasville Road. That’s when the BMW hit a white Prius.

Both cars pulled into a parking lot. The driver of the Prius confronted Kuczwanski about hitting him, the sources said. The Prius’ driver then returned to his car to wait for law enforcement’s arrival after confronting Kuczwanski. That is when, according to Florida Politics’ sources, Kuczwanski rammed his BMW into the Prius on the driver’s door, and began pushing the car sideways in the parking lot.

Kuczwanski then shot a gun at the white Prius, according to the sources. The Prius driver drew a gun and fired back into the windshield of Kuczwanski’s BMW. Kuczwanski was hit and killed, according to the sources.

The driver of the Prius then exited their vehicle on the passenger side and took cover not knowing if Kuczwanski was about to fire back.

However, Kuczwanski’s wife, Rebekah Kuczwanski, said in a Twitter thread that her husband was a victim while confirming he lost his life. She claimed that he was trapped and “assassinated” and was trying to escape the person shooting at him.

Those comments were made on a thread, posted by Florida Politics publisher Peter Schorsch, announcing Kuczwanski’s death.

“He was on his way home early to pick us up for a farewell dinner for our daughter,” she wrote. “He called to say he was on his way to beat traffic. He was excited for dinner and to see us. He told us he loved us then never came home.”

She added that his family deserves time to heal and privacy.

“Our whole lives are shattered. The children and I, his friends and family, so many who adored this wonderful, kind, loving man who would do anything for anyone. We are all devastated. The whole world lost a great man!” she wrote.

The incident took place less than two miles away from Kuczwanski’s home. He leaves behind his wife, and two children.

Dennis MacKee, speaking on behalf of the State Board of Administration, said he could not confirm that Kuczwanski was the person killed in the road rage incident, but confirmed that he died Thursday, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

“He was a quiet fellow,” MacKee said. “Everything in his world was about his family.”

Previously, Kuczwanski pleaded no contest to assault and disorderly conduct charges in 2014 related to a separate road rage incident at the same intersection, as first reported by Tallahassee Reports.

According to the probable cause affidavit for that case, deputies were dispatched after a driver called to report that another driver had “pointed a small, black in color handgun with a mounted laser at him while stopped next to him at the intersection of Thomasville Road and Bannerman Road.”

Law enforcement found Kuczwanski still inside the vehicle matching the description from the caller when they responded to that 2014 incident. A deputy verified that Kuczwanski had a weapon matching the caller’s description and arrested him on the scene. He was later sentenced to probation, which was completed in 2018.

Kuczwanski, 52, graduated from Florida State University in 1992 with a degree in political science. His career in Tallahassee included working as former Sen. Debby Sanderson’s chief of staff, communications director of the Department of Management Services, and more than 11 years with the State Board of Administration.

The final tweet on his Twitter account, an announcement that he had entered an online raffle for a firearm worth $5,000, was posted on Dec. 9, 2021.

    Wow.

I feel sorry for his kids.

    Conservatives, guns, and anger.

    Sad.

You mentioned guns, but failed to mention cars as well since they are also inanimate objects. Also, your comment on conservatives was a little one sided as well. From your statement I would assume you think progressive never make mistakes?

That wasn’t a mistake. The guy has a history of dangerous driving and brandishing. He got what was coming. Ram my car and push me across a parking lot and see what happens.

Websters dictionary defines “mistake” as a wrong action or statement proceeding from faulty judgment, inadequate knowledge, or inattention.

So yes it was a mistake, and a deadly one at that.

Also, as a gun toting 2A loving Florida resident I would have gassed him too.

Road rage isn’t a mistake it’s a violent outburst by someone who lacks self control. These things are endemic to conservatives in America.(that means they are usually like that, I know them big words be hard)

The fact that they all also live in a constant state of extreme fear and thus all carry guns around, so now the libs are arming up too. Oh and the funny thing about rage is it makes your aim poor.

Oh and in regards to the car comment, yes we agree people who confirm through crimes like this guy that they cannot be trusted with guns should also have their driving privileges removed. If he hadn’t been driving he’d still be alive.

Websters dictionary defines “mistake” as a wrong action or statement proceeding from faulty judgment, inadequate knowledge, or inattention, but that is beside the point.

So it was a mistake, and a terrible mistake at that.

Cool how everything worked out, right?

This guy was a huge asshole, his family is better off. Same with the state of Florida, and humanity in general. We all win when scumbags like this go and get themselves shot to death.

Thanks for recognizing that, as any decent human would.

I mean no one else thinks its a little strange.. A man, driving a prius, carrying a loaded gun, and having the arms training to successfully defend himself against a quiet family man on his way home for dinner and red blooded gun-toting white American conservative… its pretty obvious the killer here isn’t a “Real” Liberal, Prius owners don’t carry guns. it would violate their commie beliefs.. this man must have been a “paid actor” hired by liberals working for the international sex traffickers’, selling 5g, and vaccines, to the world since the liberals knew how much of threat the guy in the BMW was to their lib-tard commie objectives. Liberals, knew it was essential to assassinate this national treasure of a politician and public servant.

I know this is on a computer screen so there are no lines, but imagine there are lines.. then imagine what’s between them.

Witnesses have stated the BMW driver shot at the Prius as well. From the reports I’ve seen the drive of the Prius only returned fire. He didn’t start the stupid shoot out, he merely finished it. If true, obviously self defense

Guns have only one actual purpose. That is to turn living things into dead things. Although a car can be used for this purpose that is not what it is designed for.

      • Martin W Walker

        January 12, 2022 at 10:11 am

What was a car designed for?

What was a gun designed for?

          January 12, 2022 at 3:04 pm

Gun was designed to shoot paper targets. Hundreds of millions of guns in the U.S. and that is what they primarily shoot.

Just as many people die from guns as with cars. However if suicides are ruled out, more than twice as many people die because of cars than guns.

Note that the driver of the Prius had a gun and killed Kuczwanski with it. In other words, the Prius driver protected themselves with a gun from someone who was trying to harm them.

Sadly, Florida has become a state run by non-Floridians. Actual Floridians just want peace, quiet & our old beautiful Florida back. Ppl from NY, NJ who retired here for low taxes, leave! Take NYer trump & his cheesy 10kt gold plated lifestyle & his grifters w you & go back up north to shovel snow.
The natural Florida ppl came here for & immediately began to destroy was the product of DEMOCRATS. Over the course of FLs elected Govs, we’ve had 34 DEMS, 4 Others & just 8 Reps. Most reps were 21st century scum like scott & desantis. They made Florida the butt of many jokes & desantis is literally killing us. We have our guns, always have, always will, but they’re for protection (from paper targets, LOL); we don’t think of them as sex objects like ammosexual REPS do. Snowbirds, who have no children so don’t care about funding for schools, who are too old to worry about the future of our roads, bridges & environment, are just selfish old coots. They need to GO & let us have Florida back. rick scott, ron desantis, JEB! & other money hungry cheats elected by ppl from up north who came here to live out their days in retirement Villages make TERRIBLE neighbors. They’re crotchety “get off my lawn” types who care only about low taxes, cheap early bird buffets & plentiful generic Viagra. They’re why we can’t have nice things anymore, & have ruined the nice things we did have.

yeah, but this guy had previous road rage incidents on his record. If he wasn’t such a hothead, he’d still be alive. Period. And if they were also not allowed to carry guns like a bunch of neanderthals carrying big sticks trying to show how big their dicks are, he’d also be alive. And you are right, they both wielded cars like a weapon. However, if some guy came at me with a gun or a car and I had a chance to defend myself with my car, you bet he’d be roadkill.

Good point about conservatives as that should have been left out. An apparent fact is that a dangerous man went bonkers one too many times, and it hurt his family the most. For that I am saddened, and condolences to his family and friends. For him personally, it may be “good riddance” in that his lack of self control could easily have killed one or more.

I’m sorry – did you just backhandedly suggest that ramming someone’s car repeatedly and then firing into it with a weapon were ok? That’s what it felt like you said. Does the Left make mistakes? Absolutely. Generally, does someone go into a rage Right OR Left and start repeatedly ramming the other guy’s car? No. Did the “Progressive” in this case start shooting? It appears not… So… why the gross overreaction?

Progressives make plenty of mistakes.. just not shooting guns over a minor car incident and using a car as a ramming rod while all the time being a really bad shot….isn’t one of them.

          January 15, 2022 at 12:09 am

Was with you until the horseshoe theory part…makes the first point entirely incoherent from my understanding. Liberals ARE the “center”, personally I’d say toward the right, merely conservatives who inauthentically portray themselves as “tolerant” (see: Malcom X’s description of such) but are materially/ideologically aligned with the interests of the capitalist class and thus unconsciously (or dishonestly) inherently against the working class as this is a zero sum/antagonistic material relation/interest. I mean in Australia the liberal party is explicitly self-described as center-right, the core distinction being an assumed support of capitalism. Hell, Bernie’s entire platform were he in Germany is a standard Christian-democrat (conservative) platform…

To illuminate what I’m saying more clearly maybe, as this class struggle is uncoincidentally visible throughout history, we can look to the birth of the modern left in the fervent working class radicalism of the sans-culottes, their idealism slowly falling out of favor with the bourgeoisie in the National Convention in the French revolution as their egalitarian project encroached on this middle-class material power, despite riding this momentum to overthrow the Ancien régime. This bourgeoisie is what describes and characterizes the modern liberal, this is the origin of their material interests ie their class, the “center” (bourgeoisie literally means middle class).

This guy had no such compassion. He sought out to threaten an individual on at least two such occasions and did not learn his lesson.

AND with common sense gun laws, a man with such anger issues (Kuczwanski) would have had his privilege of owning a gun rescinded after his previous incident of road rage and brandishing. He would still be alive – unless he figured out another way of dangerously asserting his manliness.

um, isn’t it illegal to own a gun in Australia? Hasn’t “self-defense” been deemed an unnecessary reason to own a firearm in Australia? Isn’t the government sending people WITH GUNS out in Australian cities checking for vaccine passports and denying its citizens from being allowed to shop or be in public without showing papers?

          • RayneOfSalt

            January 14, 2022 at 7:15 am

No, it’s not. I’m Australian and I own 4. It’s illegal to own one without a proper license and correct storage (because we don’t fetishise them like America does), and certain types of guns are banned (automatic and semi-automatic). No, “self-defense” has not been deemed an unneccessary reason to own a gun, because we don’t need a reason to own one. We just to pass the police checks and licensing requirements. We also don’t spend our time fantasising about people breaking into our homes so we can kill them.

And no, “the government” is absolutely bloody not “sending people with guns” into our cities checking for “vaccine passports” or denying our people from going shopping or being in public without “showing papers”. That’s absolute nonsense.

Do you have any idea how big Australia is? How many cities we have? What do you think we have for government – one ruling body that can do whatever it wants? We don’t. We have many different layers of government at federal, state, city and municipal levels. Btw, our current FEDERAL government is made up of trump-loving conservatives who regularly spout vaccine and covid misinformation. Like they’d be doing any of what you’re suggesting? Please, stop believing the garbage you hear on fox news or read on facebook. It’s harming your mental health, and you don’t have the universal healthcare to look after it.

One can still have an automatic weapon but it can only be kept and used at a shooting range. So one can still have a gun for self defense. In addition the poor soul who died would have served time after the first incident. The information re guns in oz is readily available,

Mr wood , your reporting appears to be mostly accurate, however I would like to point out that crime scene video shows 6-7 yellow placards at the right rear of the prius, indicating shell casings which note that a shooter of a semi auto pistol fired from outside the prius and those casings landed to their right and slightly rear, which suggest while your man was ” taking cover , add’l shot were being fired ….This may or may not be important,

Hello, I’m a 66 year old woman who drives a Prius! I have a long commute My Prius gets great gas mileage and has never left me on the side of the road. It’s very sad someone lost a life due to road rage. Road rage and calling out a person for his or her beliefs are forms of BULLYING. If you have to be a bully hiding behind the internet then don’t post at all!

      • Leah Ma

        January 12, 2022 at 3:44 pm

Why does everyone assume they can tell a person’s political party by the car they drive? My husband & I had 4 Mercedes and a few other cars; my daughter & her youngest daughter have only ever had Mercedes–but we’re all socialists! My grandfather was a Socialist, my mom & grandmother all FDR women. People should stop judging by such superficial means! That lady driving by you in the Mercedes may be a fire breathing left winger!

A similar incident happened to my Son and His friend, got the tag number & all, & TPD & LCSO did nothing. Sadly, it seems like nothing is done until these types shoot & kill somebody (see Michael Drejka), or in this case, shot & killed themselves. People who pull guns on people unprovoked should serve a mandatory jail sentences, & have their 2A rights revoked, period.

So sad that someone lost their life for a senseless act of road rage. Guns don’t shoot people, people that handle gun irresponsibly have consequences for their actions. The provider in this tragic incident appears to have a history of road road. Condolences to his family. I’m sure the other person involved feels remorse for the tragic outcome.

  • William

Kind and loving at home and around his peers, but a bully on the road. Two different personalities. Maybe he had a hidden personality that his family and peers did not see. It’s sad that he lost his life in a senseless act of road rage. Not a good outcome for him nor his family. It affects so many others when people don’t think before do a senseless act that can’t be undone. Prayers for all involved in such a tragic incident.

Maybe not scapegoat people with multiple personalities. That’s really scummy fear mongering and hurts innocent people just so you can pretend someone doesn’t have issues regarding managing their emotions, or other flaws that could be accessible if observed and reacted to with honesty. Given the “classic values” typical of a Republican proponent, never mind a representative outright, he probably is taught to shove his feelings deep down where nobody can see them, leaving him prone to explosions at inopportune times such as road rage. Does that mean that’s why this happened? Maybe, maybe not, but it’s more likely by miles than finding the mythical murderhobo multiple personality unicorn who seeks opportunities to hurt people.
BTW, best understanding currently is that “multiple personalities”, as you describe it, comes from traumatic experience, so congratulations, you’re pointing pearl clutching fears at victims of suffering who just are trying to survive this crazy, violent world. -and you’re doing so throwing stones from a glass house, so maybe not do that.

I’m going to assume this was a genuine mistake of ignorance, not ahhh act of malice, but honestly the world is much better without such hostile assumptions. I hope you take considerationof this post

Very unfortunate. I knew a guy once (just in general passing) like the late john, quick to anger, bully, threatening violence anytime he lost his temper. He did it to everyone. Unfortunately his life ended just as tragically too. A 90 year old business partner shot him in the head after a threatening argument. The 90 year old said he wasnt taking deceased abuse any longer and it was totally worth it. He served 2 years of a life sentence before dying of old age himself. Lesson to be learned always keep your cool! And go see a therapist and figure out your deep rooted anger already before you die or do jail.

It’s sad that the original article mentioned who guy worked for in an attempt to make one political party look bad. I’m pretty sure neither guy was talking politics when they started shooting. I also don’t think the article mentioned the killers political affiliation, only the deceased. and you guys are lapping it up and pointing fingers like you matter. One person lost his life and the other person will be getting charged with murder. Albeit he’ll get off with self defense, but that will still be on his record, let alone his conscience, forever. I even read above someone mentioning Trumps taint! What the fuck is wrong with you all?

You know the type. The type that couldn’t pass my Engineering grad program, so you settled for a University of Phoenix Sociology diploma. I am talking about almost all of you, here. Sounds to me like this guy had a pattern, and it cost him his life. You hate the thought that people own guns, UNLESS the Prius driver is possibly a Progressive. LOL! I rolled up behind a Prius in downtown St. Pete last week. It had a Trump decal on the back of it. I know a conservative that drives a Tesla 3. I know dozens of “progressives” that own guns. Your generalizations and narratives are all false. You are as bad as those that follow the Orange Goblin.

The real problem here is not even being mentioned. I don’t care what the dead dudes political affiliation is (was), he brandished a gun in a road rage incident. That should have been a felony, aggravated assault, BUT because he was seen by the elite effing system to “be someone” he was allowed to plead no contest to lesser charges. Had the da & judge done their jobs he would have been a convicted felon, not allowed to have a gun, and when the prison sentence was done he may have thought twice before bullying anyone with his hooootsie tooootsie effin POS car. He obviously has (had) anger management issues which also should have been a red flag in the process for obtaining a weapon. I don’t understand why these forums have to be reduced to the fighting & name calling and the “let’s blame a group of people game”, that just shows how uninformed the poster really is, and it happens on both sides. A constructive “spirited discussion” does not have to resort to what happened in this thread. In all honesty, no one can justify his actions. I don’t care who was at fault, who did what to whom. Rational, normal people do not ram other peoples cars and start shooting because they feel they were wronged behind the wheel of a vehicle. And the dead guy had already proven he was not mature enough to be trusted with a weapon, much less the kind one could conceal. It is really sad commentary on what has happened to this country and it has NOTHING to do with guns. It does have everything to do with the loss of respect in this country, the loss of effective parenting in this country and the apparent belief that one can do what ever they want without consequences. They guy shooting at someone and ramming his car into another persons car is not the problem folks, they are symptoms, symptoms of a much greater problem.
