Gov. Ron DeSantis believes that toll roads in New York City are really just an elaborate grift, with money collected not going to repairs at all.
During remarks Saturday in Clinton, Iowa, the 2024 Republican presidential candidate fumed about the cash collection and contended the money really is just enriching the Democratic “machine.”
“I don’t know if you guys have ever driven around New York City. I mean, you can spend, if you go to, you know, a few boroughs, you can spend $60 or $70 on tolls in one day, no questions asked. You definitely can do that,” DeSantis told people in a town with less than 25,000 people near the Illinois border.
DeSantis wasn’t remotely finished, however.
“And yet, these are like the worst roads in America. It’s like, how do you charge that much for tolls and every road? I mean, I get motion sickness just driving on these roads,” DeSantis continued.
“And I think the reason is it goes to special interests. It goes to the Democrat machine and they use it to launder and keep support for the party. That’s where the money is going because I can tell you it’s not going to make the roads better,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis’ allegations of graft notwithstanding, the New York Times notes that tolls may be on the increase due to persistent budget deficits, with a London-style congestion pricing model being mulled.

The Florida Turnpike was supposèd to go free when it paid off its construction bonds.

Thank you “The Ronald” for pointing out the financial grift related to the public utility toll roads up there in Dook 4 Brains Leftist New York.
As you know we have the exact same theft of public moneys right here in the Great State of Florida in respect to the City ran public utilities in Gainesville, Tallahassee, and other leftist operated cities which also operate the public utilities here in Florida.
Now we understand why you, Rick Scott, and Jeb Bush ignore whatever happens in the leftist ran Tallahassee (because y’all lived there in the Govornor’s Mansion). But why ignore the graft and corruption in leftist ran Gainesville? They are making out like bandits here in G.ville robbing the peasents blind. Not everyone here in HogTown is an uber wealthy college professor, driving a Volvo, wearing a tweed jacket, and supporting Hamas.
Many of us are just regular working shmoes struggling to just get by.
Can you please toss us a bone and give us some relief here in Hogtown?
We dont care if you ever help Tallahassee with the same issue because we are Gators they are Semimoles and we dont like them.
But please help us here in Gainesville Sir we need some relife here as we are really taking a beating under 8iden ‘nomics too.

The roads in Florida are worse. Construction projects taking decades instead of a few years. New York built major bridges in the time it took a diverging diamond to be built in Florida.

The near-miraculous, almost overnight replacement of the burned out section of I-95 overpass in PA shows that it is possible to work together and get necessary things done promptly.

Always a drama queen. Meanwhile, in his own state he’s providing toll road discounts for those who use them more than others, so it’s unequal. Why shouldn’t a senior cancer patient get a toll road discount for driving back and forth to chemo and radiation? In Ron’s world they are ineligible unless they are frequently commuting back and forth to a job, or perhaps, white supremacist rallies.

Classic rich people’s cheapness.
Duval locals paid tolls on the Mathews bridge and had it paid off, but the toll booths didn’t finally come down until the toll booths on the new limited-access highway (J. Turner Butler Blvd.) in St. Johns County were removed. Such a deal.
Ironically, the cheapskates of Ponte Vedra who engineered removing tolls from JTB are now choking on traffic.

Look what DeSantis has learned about constructing lies from Donald Trump.
Begin with a way to wriggle out of the claim that’s coming, begin with something like “I think….” Then make a broad claim followed by a specific claim. (I think, special interests, Democrat machine):
“And I think the reason is it goes to special interests, it goes to the Democrat machine and they use it to launder and keep support for the party…”
Now that you have established that you merely “think” the specific claim is true, repeat the claim as if you know it is true, and provide “proof” with another claim (is, it’s not):
“That’s where the money is going because I can tell you it’s not going to make the roads better,” DeSantis said.
The problem for DeSantis is that the people who like this kind of magical logic already have their enchanter, and even if he goes to prison they will never fully embrace DeSantis because he has established himself as disloyal and unworthy by running against Trump.

Florida’s turnpike system is a ponzi scheme. The first turnpike was supposed to be free after it was paid off. Instead, our government uses the proceeds to fund roads to nowhere like the suncoast parkway and as ante for hugh bonds. Meanwhile the insiders buy up land near future interchanges to get rich.
