Danielle Cohen Higgins has jumped into the race to replace Daniella Levine Cava on the Miami-Dade County Commission.

Cohen Higgins, a lawyer, has a background in the field of complex commercial civil litigation. She has also worked to provide legal services to small businesses and the seriously injured.

In addition, she has experience on the executive committee of Ruth’s List, a group that supports pro-abortion rights Democratic candidates.

Cohen Higgins is looking to serve District 8, in the southern part of the county, now that Levine Cava has announced a 2020 run for county Mayor.

“We need leadership that will continue the fight to get South Dade its fair share and ensure our community’s voice is well represented on the County Commission. I am prepared to fight for us and advocate for positive changes that will lift up our entire community for generations to come,” Cohen Higgins said in a statement announcing her run.

“South Dade is a special place to live and raise a family, but we must continue to address the challenges we face. Commissioner Levine Cava has been a forceful voice for South Dade, and I want to ensure the progress achieved is not lost.

“We have mounting issues like the skyrocketing cost of living, a true affordability crisis, and traffic that has become a dangerous nightmare and I am ready to confront these challenges head-on.”

Palmetto Bay Vice Mayor John DuBois is also running for the District 8 seat, launching his campaign in April. The special election for the seat will likely take place in 2020.
