Marco Rubio doubles down on PPP defense while bashing student loan bailout

Rubio
"It's not even the same thing."

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio is again refuting any attempt by political critics to link student loan bailouts with the Paycheck Protection Program he helped bring to life during the pandemic.

During comments made on NBC 6 Sunday, Rubio insisted that the two programs have nothing in common despite both being rooted in federal loans.

“It’s not even the same thing. A PPP loan didn’t go to the business. The business didn’t make money off it. The PPP loans were designed to pay their workers. So the only thing you could use PPP money were to pay the salaries of your workers or the rent on your building so you wouldn’t get evicted. That was it. If we hadn’t done that then all of those workers would have been laid off or fired and they would have gone on the unemployment rolls. So we were going to pay for it either way,” Rubio said.

“So the question is, what is the better way to get money to workers, who are not being allowed to work, by the way. That’s the other thing you have to remember about PPP: the government was telling businesses ‘You’re not allowed to open. You’re not allowed to work.’ We were either going to do it through unemployment or through this program. So that’s the difference,” Rubio contended.

Rubio’s comments during the weekend television interview track with his previously expressed positions on the Joe Biden championed loan bailout.

In a late August op-ed for Fox Business, Rubio contrasted the “stunning success” of the Paycheck Protection Program to the “handout” proposed by the White House.

“This payroll grant, structured deliberately as a forgivable loan, had one key condition: that 80% of the funds go to payroll,” Rubio asserted.

Rubio contended that while businesses should bear no responsibility for the pandemic and economic changes it brought, student debtors should have known the risks they were hazarding before signing up for classes on the federal dime.

“Let’s start with the obvious: federal student loans were just that, loans. The whole idea was that students would take the loans to pay for an education that would lead to a job that repays them,” he said.

Rubio has contrasted his position on loans with his opponent in the November General Election.

Val Demings to Millions of Taxpayers: Screw You,” read an August email from the Rubio camp, condemning Demings for supporting President Biden’s “student loan bailout.”

“basic fact that many critics of Biden’s program do not appear to understand: The federal government forgives student loans all the time. Multiple statutes give the Department of Education sweeping authority to cancel loans for a broad range of reasons.

Before Wednesday, the administration had already approved $32 billion in student loan relief for more than 1.6 million borrowers.* These actions did not provoke substantial controversy or litigation.

Nobody raised a legal challenge when Biden canceled $5.8 billion in student loans for more than 323,000 disabled borrowers. Nobody raised a legal challenge when Biden announced rolling loan forgiveness for borrowers who entered public service—a plan that has already granted $10 billion in debt relief to more than 175,000 borrower”—slate

Must be sad to devote your life to making sure someone else doesn’t get anything!

    Student Loan forgiveness.
Teachers, nurses, doctors, and other individuals with student debt who are contributing to a better society are benefiting from this action along with millions of Floridians.
I paid my way for college and I paid for my children’s college education. I am happy for those who are benefiting from this loan forgiveness program.
Why isn’t Rubio standing up and supporting a program that helps Floridians

    September 5, 2022 at 10:03 pm

So I have seen a LOT of Bull in the comments from the Usual Biden bad Trump good. To the Trump bad Biden Good.

So here is this. What ever happened to the old…. Life is not fair. What happened to the ” Some times you get lucky and some times you don’t” The “Lifes tough but no use Complaining” Guess that goes out the window when its tough on you huh?

So heres where the student loan vs PPP loan thing gets Murky.
    1. Many Companies. Specially big ones. and Ones ran by Politian’s on BOTH sides used PPP to pay employees so they could use the Saved up money and also other capital to Increase stock value or add to profits. They did not NEED it to stay afloat it just was more money in the pocket.

    2. The student loan processes in the US were made Completly horrid by the US government when they privatized it and allowed Lobbying and Laws that allowed predentary Lending as well as JUST short of Lies in the fine print. As well as Allowed those issuing the loans to mislead and create policy that made Paying it back harder and understanding it Harder.

    3. Life is not fair. Get use to it. No one gives 2 craps about if your offended. This is about helping the econemy over all and honestly. I paid back all my loans. But I do not care if they forgive others because I am not a A- hole. Good for those kids. To bad for you. Get over your selves.

    4. Before we start Going off about Tax payer money being wasted For bad decisions. Lets talk about Texas power grid refusal to upgrade leading to disaster (that only effected texas.) that Cost US taxpayers Billions in relief. Sure it was a Disaster. But ONLY because of Texas refusal to Do what they should have done. Lets talk about Wall street bail outs. Or Bank Bail outs. Or Auto company bail outs. Or Pharmaceutical bail outs that Cost SO MUCH. Or About subsidies or tax breaks for these companies or A little known thing called NOL for taxes. ALL of which reward poor Finacial descions or just plain criminal behavior. BUT Time and time again. Often with Endorsement from the Left and RIght. We bail them out. So they can put money in already rich peoples pockets. Always with the Excuse.
“To big to fail. Bad for the country if they fall. Or best for the country if they succeed.”
But this which will open up Millions if not billions of dollars of Consumer spending a year. Which will increase the amount of money these people can spend. Improving their lives and thus raising the amount of money they actual put into the economy.

THIS is bad? Why? Cause it hurts some ones little feelings? Gonna make grandpa Bob cry? Offends some one?
Get over your selves. Stop being sensitive Snow flakes just cause it is not about you. It over all best for the country. Will generate more money and open up a LOT more leeway in fighting Inflation as well as stimulate the economy.
Compared with that. I do not give to craps if some one feels it is unfair or gets offended by it.
