First Shot

House Speaker Daniel Perez says property tax relief is coming, but it won’t be until 2026.

As Perez lauded Gov. Ron DeSantis’ “exciting and provocative” proposal to end property taxes, the Speaker criticized the Governor for not suggesting any detailed language for this Legislative Session, despite DeSantis specifically saying on more than one occasion that he wanted a referendum.

“As the weeks have gone by, the Governor has yet to come forward with … any specific plan, or with actual bill language,” Perez said, suggesting the House will fill the void.

“It’s my intention to pass our House property tax plan during the first week of the 2026 Session,” Perez said.

The Select Committee will meet throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall. Republican Reps. Vicki Lopez and Toby Overdorf will serve as Chairs.

“This is about bringing the very best proposals to the people of Florida so they have an opportunity to decide their own fate,” Perez said.

He added that the House is seeking to do something “the Governor and the Senate were willing to do” and “apply the same revenue restrictions to ourselves that we are asking local governments to endure.”

Quote of the Day

“There are a few truths we hold to be self-evident: ‘Die Hard’ is a Christmas movie; almond and cashew milk is more accurately described as nut juice; and President Trump’s library should be located here in the state of Florida.”

— Rep. Alex Andrade, introducing a bill putting the state in charge of the eventual Donald Trump Presidential Library.

Magic to keep playoff hopes alive

The Orlando Magic try to stay alive in the NBA Finals tonight as they face the Boston Celtics (8:30 p.m. ET, FanDuel Sports Network – Florida).

Boston topped Orlando 107-98 on Sunday to take a three-games-to-one series lead over the Magic. Orlando has been a two-man team for much of the series. Forwards Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner have averaged 58 points per game combined. No other players have averaged in double figures for the Magic.

Last season, Orlando was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Magic have not won a playoff series since 2010, when they advanced to the Eastern Conference finals before losing to the Celtics.

If Boston wins tonight, the Celtics will advance to face the winner of the series between the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons. The Knicks lead the series 3-1 entering tonight’s game five of the series.

If the Magic ward off elimination with a win in Boston, the series will return to Florida for Game 6 on Thursday. If the series goes the distance, game seven is scheduled to be played in Boston on Saturday.

In the history of the NBA playoffs, 13 teams have won a series after falling behind three games to one. The last team to do it was the 2020 Denver Nuggets.
