Gov. DeSantis says Florida prepared for what could be the most active hurricane season in history

DeSantis AP
The Governor faced questions in South Florida about a storm forecast.

Hurricane researchers at Colorado State University (CSU) are forecasting that 2024 could be the most active season yet in the Atlantic Basin. Yet Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says the state is prepared for hurricane season, even if the experts “don’t know that we prepare” whether a season is active or not.

During a news conference, the Governor lauded latter-day building practices and a prominent state utility as evidence that Florida is unlikely to face a catastrophe like 1992’s devastating Hurricane Andrew, no matter what the balmy tropical waters may serve up.

“The newer construction can withstand strong hurricanes,” DeSantis said in Davie. “We’re going to continue to have them whether they’re worse or not. I don’t know if there’s data for that, but I think some people assert that, but either way we’re in a situation where, you know, this stuff has worked.”

The Governor lauded Florida Power & Light (FPL) for making infrastructure improvements that have protected key equipment and truncated the lengthy restoration timelines of years gone by.

“FPL had done things with their substations where they raised some of the substations. So you had massive flooding in certain parts of the state and yet it didn’t soak the substation. Guess what that means. That’s the difference in getting people hooked up again within 48 hours versus it taking two weeks or something like that,” DeSantis said.

There certainly appears to be ample opportunity to test DeSantis’ confident hypothesis.

CSU expects 23 named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to Nov. 30, with 11 hurricanes developing and five projected to be at least a Category 3 at some point in their life cycle.

The Governor has offered interesting hurricane takes throughout his political career, including suggesting earlier this year that President George W. Bush took disproportionate blame for his handling of Hurricane Katrina in his second term, a fumble by the former President that soured much of the public on the remainder of his second term.

He also made light of minor hurricanes, saying that Floridians aren’t even fazed until eyewall winds are over 110 mph in a stop during his failed presidential campaign.

“But on the hurricanes it’s kind of like, you know, if it’s like a Category 1, people say, ‘All right, you know, we’ll have a picnic or something,'” he said in Iowa.

“Category 2, well, we just go on our way,” DeSantis continued. “Category 3, well, you know, maybe they’ll make a slight adjustment. Then only if it’s above, then people really start to worry about it because you kind of live and you learn.”

In 2022, as he ran for re-election, the Governor faced questions about his office’s inability to figure out where the center of Hurricane Ian would make landfall. He claimed then that the “national regime media” wanted the storm to hit Tampa to exact maximum destruction.

In 2023, the Governor dealt with an insurance market that was as strained as any in Florida history. That became an issue in the presidential race, with Donald Trump and Nikki Haley weaponizing it against DeSantis.

While campaigning the same year, he told a radio host in New England that residents of his home state should “knock on wood” and hope Florida didn’t get hit by a storm.

“Like Baltimore?” You have missed the point of the reference, but that did not stop you from immediately jumping to erroneous conclusions and assumptions, resulting in your making slanderous insults. However, it does reveal who and what you are. Pathetic, to be kind and candid.

sally b, for me to mistake one of your comments as a racist one is understandable from my point of view, that you have said that you do not share. you never did say what the like baltimore quote was about. you shouldn’t have left baltimore for florida in my opinion. as i’ve stated many times, florida is a hell hole. yeah, i would almost bet that you are a registered maga white christian nationalist. i have been wrong before. You claim to be overly educated. Is that a euphemism for being of interior intellect? In Florida, a person may not register as a MAGA white Christian nationalist. In your delusional world, is there a jurisdiction anywhere in the United States where one may do so? Kindly advise as the “overly educated” activist troll. I am enjoying you. Sometimes I cannot tell the difference between reactionary activists and neo-Marxist activists. All pigs smell alike to me.

sally b, you fool, who would register as a “maga white christian nationalist”? that’s’ a non- sequitur if i ever heard one. ” in my delusional world “, is that how you see people that significantly disagree with you to the point they think you are a pretentious fool. attack me all you want, i know what you are. as i said before, as soon as i seen that word “woke” used by you, i knew right then what kind of person you are. woke means to care about things and those that need cared about. i believe in being as woke as i can be. if you make a negative thing out of that, i know who you are.

Donald Trump on Thursday afternoon lost two separate attempts to dismiss criminal cases, one in Florida and another in Georgia.

In Florida federal court, Judge Aileen Cannon rejected Trump’s bid to drop charges against him related to his alleged mishandling of hundreds of classified documents after he left the White House.

    Good evening America,
    Remember:
ITS NOT “NEWS” UNTIL EARL “WEIGHS IN”:
    One word: “PREPARATION”.
America, Ron and The Beautiful Casey have always been excellant at preparing our State for whats to come. And this upcoming Hurricane season is no exception.
    Thank you Ron & Casey.
This is a major “PUSH FACTOR” in most of Florida’s (along with the Nations) registared Democrats plans to “Seceretly” cross party lines and vote Trump …. basically because almost all registared Democrats know this latest crop of Democratic Politicians locally and nationally have totally “GONE OFF THE RAILS ON A CRAZY TRAIN”.
    ALSO:
Democrats, one and all, are “EVER SO HOPEFULL” that Trump will Do The Right Thing by selecting Ronald DeSantis as Trump”s Running Mate. Mainly because American Democratic regestaired Voters have been jellous of Conservatives ability to Relax Their Political Sphincters.
So thats it, America, most registared Democrats always fret and worry 24/7 about “Going To HEII” for their past Political Sins and want to finally “Do Right”.
So TO ALL EARL’S BESTY LEFTYS dont fear crossing party lines and sneeking in that Trump Vote. Once you do you will experience immediate The Sphincter Relaxation which you have been denied all your miserable lives affilitated with The Dook 4 Brains Left.
AND THAT, AMERICA, IS “THE REST OF THE STORY” which has been brought to you by Earl Pitts American.

But then, that’s what not very intelligent people do when they don’t have an answer, they just start throwing insults. And yeah, I have a sense of humor. April 6, 2024 at 10:41 am

sally b, you said something about my comment being troll and not facilitating to ” civil dialog “. who says i care about having a civil dialog. i troll christians and maga cultist because i like to, and those 2 groups don’t get any way near their share of criticism and just abuse. christians believe in lies and maga believe in lies, i guess that’s the part i don’t like about either group. i suspect you are a member of both groups. BTW desantis is a huge POS. i have never been able to debate or have a civil discussion with a maga cultist. no one can. you’re judging me because i don’t give a damn about things you care about like writing and grammar. how shallow and christian of you.

You suspect. There it is. You don’t believe in civil dialogue with any individual with whom you have a real or perceived difference of opinion. Perhaps, you lack the intellectual discipline to engage in a civil dialogue with those whom you assume or presumptuously perceive as having an opinion or perspective different from yours.

But dont worry Rick I will be able to help Sally B and Big Larry get over their “Cop-Out Indesicive Voting Handicaps” and see the future Sage Wisdom of making their votes count for something by either voting for one of the 2 (R or D) “REAL CANDIDATES”.
            BUT WAIT THERES MORE:
If Sally and Big Lar fall into this catagory we Can-Not help them to Do Better:
Reasearch indicates 89.335% of “Self Proclaimed” 3rd Party Voters are really just a bunch of Fat Lazy “Mo-Fo’s” who never even get up off the comfy couch and even vote at all.
Most likely Sally B & Big Lar fall into this “Most Lazy Of The Lazy Catagory” and are beyond help even from Earl.

SALLY B, you just don’t get it. you disparage my intellect by saying that i won’t have civil dialog with those of another opinion. no, it’s not opinion. i Challange your intellect by saying that. opinion is whether you prefer the king james over old english, or whether you prefer conservative politics over progressive. when you believe in jesus, heaven, and all those other lies you pass off as truths to back up your opinions, no that’s not the same. what you were referring to about, one opinion having dialog with someone else with a different opinion being civil, i agree. what i do, which is to expose chistians as those who pass lies off as truths and then say, just take it on faith, well, i don’t take it on faith. i’ll let you do all the taking it on faith you want to. just don’t expect ME to believe you if you are basing a statement as a fact and it is just taking it on faith. christians clog this world up. it would run much smooter without their obsinance.

What is your problem with Christians and Christianity?  Do you have the same or substantially similar issue with Jews and Judaism, Buddhists and Buddhism, Hindus and Hinduism, Islam and Muslims, and (my personal favorite) Atheist and Wtheism (Notice how I conspicuously omitted agnostics and agnosticism, as well as my use of capital letters, which are sometimes critical to context)?  A basic tenet to classical liberalism, as opposed to neoliberalism or Marxism or neo-Marxism, is political or religious tolerance, which does not mean or imply acceptance, simply tolerance. Again, between Trump Q whatever activists and you the “overly educated” activists, I sometimes can distinguish; for all pigs smell alike to me.

          April 7, 2024 at 2:49 pm

sally b, my problem with all religions is that they are based on old lies and misconceptions for the purpose of control and denomination. all this neo this and neo that you used in your post, come on i’m not a baby. i’ve been studying some form of behaviorial science since the 60’s. do you really think i’m not knowledgeable on. isms and ologies. you mentioned punctuation again in your post with the capitalized and not context bullshit. i don’t care about punctuation grammar and all that shit you concern yourself with. i know it, i just don’t value it so much like you do. you seem to be bothered by such petty bull. pettiness is a christian thing, i know. it’s an intregal part of their control system. maga white christian nationalist like yourself rely on control. judging aperson by their speech, beliefs, dress, and wealth, is a christian thing. you have disparaged me on things like or similar to these traits. you are a maga christian, but you won’t tell me that. i’m pretty sure i have you pegged right. but since you are as about as ingenuous as a juvenile deliquiate, you won’t be honest with me. you WILL critisize me as christians do. i read a lot of voltaire and emerson, but i don’t get my knowledge from any one source. i bet i read a lot of stuff you haven’t heard of. christians don’t treat competing philosophies with any respect at all. the burning of the libraries of alexandreia is the christian solution for competing ideas. i’m just not a fan of conspiracy theories like christianity.

But they also raised the caps for people to get on Citizens now so his mcMansion addicts can now build/buy in risk prone areas and then just sign up for Citizens. That is the real reason it’s so unstable. The legislature actually said, hey guys, $750-$1M is just a normal house these days in Florida, nothing fancy, so we want to be sure everybody can be covered through Citizens. Look it up, another story in Fla Pol. There used to be a state disaster fund and he bragged during his reelection campaign it was stuffed with like 2.2B or something? (Don’t quote me I have to find that story but it’s archived in Flapol). But then they started using it for who knows what – law suits, the RD Private Airlines For Political Stunts, Inc., pension, and I don’t know what else but it’s been crickets about that disaster fund which was supposed to exist for worst case disaster. I don’t know if that is the source of the $2B funds they “donated” to the reinsurance market in the ploy to stabilize the insurance market. Anybody who knows please comment. It just seems like he’s almost gleeful about disaster, almost like it’s planned to remake the state or something. And the one thing his administration is really good at is keeping any real data on lockdown.

Governor Ron DeSantis is the greatest principled conservative leader in a generation and the most effective governor in the history of the free state of Florida.

sally b, your comment is a blatant baldfaced lie. how can you expect to be taken seriously by stating something that is so obviously a lie? desantis’ primary campaign was a glaring example of what i am saying. being an overly politically biased person, i don’t expect to understand a thing i say.

You make many assumptions about people whom you have never met time and time again. It’s a manifestation of your own biases and prejudices.

sally b, i make assumptions based on what you say. if you don’t want the assumptions, don’t make the statements. of course, i make assumptions, you just made one about me. what’s your christian point? i’m biased against those who are trying to destroy my country. and yes, i HATE those who mix religion with state. am i supposed to feel bad about not being like you, i don’t think so. you SEEM very sanctimonious.

Then explain why America’s Governor — Ron DeSantis — won re-election by the greatest landslide in the history of modern Florida politics. I’m not expecting a plausible explanation; but, rather, I am expecting insults from a “man” who claims to be among, not the highly educated, but rather the “overly educated” (more liked the overly indoctrinated). Simple minds make simple arguments or, in your case, simple and often potty-mouth insults.

sally, i speak the way i speak and you don’t approve. desantis won big because florida voters wanted him at the time. some who voted for him have become quite dismayed by his behavior, speech, and unfounded positions since then. florida has become a thoroughly maga state, so why wouldn’t floridians vote for him like a flock of lemmings. did you get the unplausible answer you were expecting from a non christian guy like me. are you insinuating that i’m ” simple minded ” because i am critical of you being a christian? i think i pegged you. maybe not. it’s hard for me to read a disingenuous person. christians almost always skew everything they think with a christian slant.

Dee’s victory was made easier by his ham-handed voter suppression laws and implementation. This year the effect of the purges is starting to cause MAGAs to prematurely celebrate, but they may get a surprise from the non-affiliated.

The impact: Some two dozen Florida-based insurers are on a regulator’s watchlist due to their financial predicaments.

“We’re not sure how many of those are going to survive,” Friedlander says. “We expect more to fail.”
In some parts of Florida, residents must now turn to the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance for coverage, whose rate increases are restricted by lawmakers.
It has become the largest insurer in the state with more than 1.2 million customers.
In the event of more extreme weather events, “we all could be on the hook to help replenish their funds,” says Friedlander, a Florida resident.
Between the lines: Home replacement costs have risen 55.4% since 2019, according to the institute, as wages and material costs escalated.

Another problem is that the cost of reinsurance — essentially insurance for insurers — has also risen to prohibitive levels for companies operating in areas prone to escalating climate risks.
Worth noting: When homes become uninsurable, it makes it difficult to get a mortgage on the property.

In some cases, insurers are revising the types of policies they offer by including deductibles that are a percentage of the home’s value, instead of a flat amount.
Lanham says the risk of rising rates is that it’ll make areas unaffordable for certain residents and will trigger migration, causing coastal residents to move inland, for example.

florida science, with all that being said, move out of florida while you can still sell your house, if you wait too long it won’t be nearly as profitable to do so. get ahead of the rush.

sally b, boy that ” overly educated ‘ term sure got under your craw for some reason! i moved out of florida years ago. i still retain some properties there, but i don’t claim florida in any way. i got out of florida because it was the opposite of paradise, so one of us is wrong. i live near dollywood now. i am not masquerading as an angry activist troll, i am openly an angry activist troll. if there is any masquerading going on it’s you are trolling and pretending that you are above it all. typical christian. sally b., you’re a mess.

One of these days, America, its going to be “Silly Wabitt Pitts American” “Do you, Earl, take the Silly Wabitt to be your lawfully wedded wife”? “I Do” said Earl Pitts American. “I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU SAGE MAN AND SILLY WABBIT” said the Preacher.
